Q. Where can I camp in the Northport-Omena area?

A. Check out Leelanau State Park north of Northport. It’s part of the Michigan State Parks System and offers a rustic campground and two mini cabins that sleep four each. You can check it out at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources site

Q. Are there hiking trails in the area?

A. Yes, there are hiking trails at the Leelanau State Park as well. This 1,350 acre state park offers eight and a half miles of trails for cross country skiing or hiking depending on the season. You can also enjoy looking for Petoskey stones, swimming, picnicking, and a playground area. It also has the Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum on its grounds. Museum tours are an additional charge beyond the park entrance fees.

A. In 2009 the population of Leelanau Township, which includes Northport, Omena and the surrounding area was 2,215.

A. The Leelanau Township Library, the Northport Marina, Scott’s Filling Station and Tamarack Gallery all offer Wi-Fi access to the Internet.

Q. What can I do on a rainy day in Northport and Omena?

A. There’s a lot to do. It’s a great day to check out all the shops in town, a nice time to stop at one of our local restaurants or to tour a local museum. Here are a few activities that are sure to please:

  • o Pick out a lovely ceramic piece and paint it at the Ceramic House
  • o Go craft shopping at Dolls & More
  • o Find a great new or used book at Dog Ears Books
  • o Go antiquing at By Chance or By Design
  • o Enjoy Wi-Fi access at Scott’s while you sip a latte or enjoy Moomers ice cream
  • o Tour the Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum in the Leelanau State Park
  • o Visit the Tamarack Gallery in Omena and the Joppich Gallery and Pier Wright Galleries in Northport

Q. Is there public beach access in Northport and Omena?

A. There are two public beaches in Northport, at Marina Park and at Haserot Park. There is also a public beach in Omena on beautiful Omena Bay. North of Northport you can enjoy the beach at Peterson Park and get a workout in by climbing the staircase down the cliff to the lake (the real workout comes when you climb back up). The beach at the Leelanau State Park near the lighthouse is a great place to search for Petoskey stones.

Q. I’m only going to be in your area for a day. What should I be sure to visit?

A. Check out the Grand Traverse Lighthouse Museum, walk the beaches in Leelanau State Park, check out the Northport Area Heritage Association Museum and browse our lovely shops. We also have great restaurants to visit.

Q. What are the local governmental units for the area?

A. Omena and Northport are located in Leelanau Township, Michigan. Omena is an unincorporated village and is governed by Leelanau Township. Northport is an incorporated village and has its own separate governmental body. Here are links to the village, township and county Web site.

Celebrate the start of the weekend at our free Music in the Park concerts each summer Friday at 7 p.m. Enjoy your favorite groups and a beautiful view of the bay from Northport's Marina Park. Bring your chairs or blankets and a picnic and make an evening of it.
